When you are building a new house or renovating an old one, the size of the windows is one of the most important factors to consider. Windows aren’t just responsible for providing a great view, they can regulate the temperature in your home while making space appear larger and brighter. The size of your windows can affect the value of your home as well. That’s why it’s highly important to make the right choice at the planning stage. Window companies can provide various types of windows as long as you know what you need exactly.
Reading The Size Notation
When you come to a store, you see a standard size notation to understand the dimensions of a window. The size notation has four digits. The first two show the width of a window and the second two are the height. For example, the 2022 window is 2 feet wide and 2 feet and two inches high. However, there is a trick. The actual window measurements are usually 1/2 an inch less. For example, the measurements of a 2020 window are actually 1 foot and 11.5 inches by 1 foot and 11.5 inches.
The Size of A Window Sill
The IRC (International Residential Code) states that any windowsill has to be installed at least 24 inches above the floor. So if you are after a larger window, you may not be able to find an operable one. Floor-to-ceiling windows are an excellent source of light and sunshine, but you can’t open them.
The Height of A Window
The height of a window isn’t regulated by any rules. As long as it is 24 inches above the floor, it can be as tall as you wish if the ceiling allows it. Leaving too much space between the window head and the ceiling can reduce the amount of natural light in your room. If you are after energy-efficient windows, leave as little space between the window and the ceiling as possible unless you are planning a clerestory window above the head.
The proportion of Window Width To Height
The proportion isn’t regulated by the rules so it’s your choice. If you are planning a certain décor for a room, a standard rectangular window may not compliment it in the best manner. In modern architecture, continuous windows are gaining popularity. However, they don’t look too good in traditional architecture. It’s important to consult a designer before making an order to window companies. Choosing the right window size depends mostly on your preferences. Keep in mind that large windows are a great choice for any room as long as they are properly installed and don’t become a source of drafts.

On May 16, 1979, a 17-year-old Barnard student named Grace Gold was walking near Broadway and 115th Street when a piece of masonry broke loose from the eighth floor of a Columbia-owned building and killed her. Her death produced Local Law 10 of 1980, the first law in New York City requiring periodic facade inspections […]
