The construction of the new Yankee Stadium NY started in August 2006. Though the project was controversial, the public ultimately supported the building of the new baseball stadium. The construction of the stadium cost the public a considerable amount of money, and it resulted in the loss of parkland in the Bronx. Today, the stadium is home to the New York Yankees and the New York City FC of Major League Soccer. But despite the controversy, the stadium is a spectacular, historic building that will surely draw crowds and fans from all over the world.

Getting to Yankee Stadium NY is easy. Metro-North Railroad and IRT Jerome Avenue lines both stop near the stadium. It takes about a half-hour to get from midtown Manhattan to the stadium. For tickets to the game, the stadium is accessible by bus. Alternatively, fans can also opt for prepaid parking at the surrounding streets. However, these parking lots are not operated by the Yankee organization. Ticket prices are generally higher than in other areas, so consider how you plan to get there.

Other events at Yankee Stadium

In addition to baseball games, other events at Yankee Stadium NY include religious conventions. In 1950, the stadium hosted a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention, which attracted 123,707 fans, the highest attendance of any event at the stadium. This event was so popular, the stadium was often emptied and the players brought in to sit in the outfield. The conventions continued until the late 1980s, and fans of the religion were required to remove their heels and sit in the stands.

Design

While the history of baseball in New York City is deeply rooted in the 19th century, the design of Yankee Stadium was modern in nature. Its original goal was to circle the field and contain an iconic three-deck grandstand. Instead, the grandstand stopped just short of the foul lines. The steel columns rising from the field’s center line rose to the top of a sloping shed roof, topped by a copper frieze. In the right field, the flagpoles were attached to the arching ceiling, while the affixed windows mirrored the angle of the final pitch. Despite the sparse interior decoration, the stadium is a vibrant part of the city, and its location on the 4 train allowed fans and commuters to see each other as they arrive at the ballpark.

The new stadium sits across the street from the old one, and evokes the city’s rich history by mimicking the style of the Roman Colosseum. The new stadium is also surrounded by an urban plaza that is elevated above sidewalk level, overlooking restaurants and souvenir shops along the River Avenue. This adds to the urban experience by strengthening the tie to the surrounding neighborhood. There are many similarities between the stadium’s design and its historic origins, but the new stadium is even more iconic.

Construction

New York Yankees fans can expect an exciting new stadium in the coming years. Opening on April 16, 2009, the new stadium will recreate the historic facade and unique interior features of the old stadium. The new stadium is a two-part structure, with the exterior wall constructed of limestone and granite. It will have a 31,000-square-foot Great Hall, which will serve as a concourse before entering the stadium. It will also have new executive offices and conference facilities.

The plan will take 22 acres of public parkland north of Yankee Stadium. The stadium is estimated to cost $1.3 billion, including $450 million in public subsidies. The public will also be responsible for acquiring land, building parking garages, and providing tax breaks for developers. The project won’t include the $45 million Metro-North station, which will be funded by public funds that have been accumulated in the MTA budget since the 1980s.
