10 Tips for Pressure Washing Your Home

Pressure washing is a great for cleaning driveways, sidewalks, decks, and siding. But using them improperly can damage your property.

Here are 10 tips for safely and effectively pressure washing your home.

    1. Choose the right tip: There are different tips for different jobs. A 0-degree tip is good for tough, caked-on dirt. A 15-degree or 25-degree tip is good for general cleaning. And a 40-degree tip is good for delicate surfaces like wood siding.
    2. Use the right pressure: The pressure setting on your washer should be determined by the type of surface you’re cleaning. For example, concrete can handle a higher pressure than wood.

    3. Hold the wand at the right distance: Hold the wand about 12 inches from the surface you’re cleaning. If you hold it too close, you could damage the surface. If you hold it too far away, the pressure won’t be as effective.
    4. Move the wand in even strokes:  When you’re pressure washing, always move the wand in even strokes. This will help avoid streaks and ensure that all the dirt and grime is removed. Moving the wand back and forth in even strokes will give you the best results.
    5. Don’t forget to rinse: After you’re done washing, it’s important to rinse your home thoroughly. After you’ve applied the cleaning solution, be sure to rinse the area with clean water to remove any residue. This will help remove any leftover dirt and debris that may have been kicked up by the high-pressure stream.
    6. Start at the top and work your way down: It’s best to start power cleaning at the top of your home so you don’t accidentally drip cleaning solution on windows or other surfaces that you haven’t cleaned yet.
    7. Don’t forget about corners and edges: Be sure to clean corners and edges thoroughly. These areas are often missed and can end up looking dingy even after the rest of your home has been cleaned.
    8. Shut off the water when you’re not using the nozzle: Leaving the water running while you’re not cleaning increases your risk of damaging sensitive surfaces with concentrated pressure or accidentally knocking over plants, pets, or outdoor furniture.
    9. Don’t aim the pressure washer at people or animals: The high-pressure stream of water from a pressure washer can cause serious injuries. So be sure to keep people and animals away from the area you’re cleaning.
    10. Be prepared for wetness: Pressure washing can be a messy job. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and have a place to store your wet clothes when you’re done. You might also want to Cover any nearby furniture or outdoor items that you don’t want to get wet.
